How to Make a Simple Chocolate Trifle

This is for beginning baker who wants a simple yet tasty dessert for practice. It involves making basic components (pudding and cake) and layering them in a trifle dish. Easy decorating tips are included.

Ingredients

  • 1 box of chocolate cake mix
  • 2 boxes of chocolate pudding mix
  • 2 tubs of whipped cream
  • Eggs, milk, water, as called for by the cake and pudding mix directions
  • Powdered sugar
  • Desired decorative bits (for example, M&Ms, sprinkles, etc.)

Part 1 of 2: Making the cake and puddings

    1
Prepare the cake according to the box directions. Cover with tinfoil and set aside.
    2
Prepare the puddings in the same mixing bowl, following the box directions. Set in the fridge.

Part 2 of 2: Making the trifle

    1. Place the trifle dish, large tablespoon, whipped cream tubs, decorative extras, and prepared layer materials on the table.
    2. Cut the cake into 1-inch (2.5cm) cubes. This will make it easier to use the cake for layers.
    3. Begin with a bottom layer of cake, roughly 1 to 1.5 inches (2.5 to 3.5cm) thick. Keep the layers of cake, pudding, and whipped cream as even, neat, and consistent as possible
      .
    4. Repeat step four for a total of three layers.
    5. Smooth the remaining whipped cream to form the final top layer of the trifle.
    6. Decorate it to match the theme of your event (optional). Get creative. Instagram your work at #fancytrifle

    Tips

    • The cake can be prepared as far in advance as a day before.
    • The puddings can be prepared while the cake bakes to save time, handy for having all layer materials ready together.
    • The baked cake can be cut into smaller or larger cubes. Crumbling works, too.
    • The layers can be messier according to personal preference. Consider whether neat points really count.
    • There can be more than three layers if materials are spread thinner. Consider what looks more appealing or fitting for the occasion.
    • The smooth whipped cream top is signature trifle, but the decoration can be a pleasant addition to making the dessert more unique with personal touches. Play with candy, fruit, sprinkles, and more. Think about what cake and pudding mixes could work well together to reinterpret this recipe beyond the basic "chocolate trifle".
